COA hopeful that contingency funds will cover sequester cuts
Earlier this month, COA notified providers of a potential delay in Title III funding as well as the possibility for less funding due to the federal sequestration. Several providers decided to reduce or plan to reduce services such as transportation and congregate meals in anticipation of funding cuts. We are hopeful, however, that we may be able to cover all or part of the cuts via Title III funds that we have set aside for contingencies. We will know more when we receive our Title III grant notification, which is expected by mid-May.
Title III of the Older Americans Act funds services that are designed to help seniors stay healthy and active in their communities. Title III services include transportation, congregate meals, caregiver support, legal help and wellness education. Many of these services are delivered by senior centers. In FY 2012, COA`s federal revenue was $7.021 million. Title III expenditures included 209,584 congregate meals and 176,825 transportation trips.
