Medicare open enrollment ends Dec. 7

medications

Time is running out if you need to make changes to your Medicare Advantage Plan or Part D prescription coverage. Medicare's open enrollment period ends Saturday, Dec. 7.

Medicare beneficiaries should review their coverage annually because drug formularies, provider networks and plan benefits change from year to year. The best time to review your coverage and make changes is during the open enrollment period, Oct. 15 - Dec. 7, 2013.

During this time period, you can:

  • Change from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage Plan.
  • Change from a Medicare Advantage Plan back to Original Medicare.
  • Switch from one Medicare Advantage Plan to another Medicare Advantage Plan.
  • Switch from a Medicare Advantage Plan that doesn't offer drug coverage to a Medicare Advantage Plan that offers drug coverage.
  • Switch from a Medicare Advantage Plan that offers drug coverage to a Medicare Advantage Plan that doesn't offer drug coverage.
  • Join a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan.
  • Switch from one Medicare drug plan to another Medicare drug plan.
  • Drop your Medicare prescription drug coverage completely.

To help seniors better understand and make important decisions about their Medicare coverage, the National Council on Aging has beefed up it’s My Medicare Matters website, offering two new tools to help people with Medicare decide what to do: The Rx Savings Calculator quickly estimates how much consumers could save in 2014 by switching Medicare Part D plans, and the Medicare QuickCheck™ helps people with Medicare review their current coverage, find ways to save money, and connect to options for shopping around during Open Enrollment. Seniors can also visit the Medicare website to review their coverage and compare plans that are available in their area.

Council on Aging of Southwestern Ohio (COA) can provide assistance to area seniors who are making important decisions about their Medicare and prescription drug coverage. Through a partnership with MB Senior Solutions, COA connects Medicare eligible older adults with free services including a review and analysis of individual health plan and prescription needs, and help with plan enrollment and annual renewals. Access these free services by contacting Council on Aging at (513) 721-1025.
