Drug abuse is a public health epidemic and Ohio is not immune. Use of illegal substances and misuse of prescription medications are both to blame for disability and/or early death among our youth. A dramatic increase in prescribing over the past decade has brought dangerous medications into the homes of the majority of Ohioans. As a result, addiction to prescription pain medications and their chemical lookalike, heroin, is on the rise.

Start Talking! is a new effort championed by Governor John R. Kasich’s and First Lady Karen W. Kasich aimed at preventing drug abuse among Ohio’s most vulnerable citizens – our children. The majority of substance-free adolescents credit parents, grandparents and other caregivers for the decision not to use illegal substances.

Parents, grandparents, mentors and peers can make a difference just by talking to young people about drug abuse. The Start Talking! initiative includes tools to help parents, grandparents and caregivers understand the risks to their children and empower them with simple, effective strategies to act. Know! is one component of Start Talking! It provides parents, grandparents and other caregivers with twice monthly email tips that contain current facts about alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, as well as action steps they can take to help children resist peer pressure to use.

Know! aims to increase caregiver:

  • Awareness that every child is at-risk for using substances;
  • Knowledge about alcohol, tobacco and other drugs;
  • Conversations with children about the importance of non-use.
