Learn about costs, care options and advance planning at Council on Aging's Own Your Future

Council on Aging workshop helps people plan for care needs and wishes

Medicare, Medicaid, estate planning, long-term care planning, advance directives: it’s all confusing and daunting to even contemplate. So – many people simply don’t. But when a crisis hits or if an aging parent’s health rapidly declines, they wish they had taken the time to plan ahead.

Council on Aging of Southwestern Ohio (COA) has designed a workshop to help. It’s called Own Your Future.

The workshop will be held: Saturday, October 11 from 9:00 am -2:00 p.m. at Sycamore Senior Center, 4455 Carver Woods Drive, Cincinnati, Ohio 45242. Registration is required by Oct. 9.

COA has offered Own Your Future since 2010 to help people plan for long-term care, protect their assets, and understand what living options and services are available to them as they age and their care needs change. Experts will cover topics such as estate and financial planning, Medicare and Medicaid, advance directives, and long-term care options.

Participants will receive a toolkit of information, checklists, and resources designed to help them create a long-term care plan of their own. A box lunch will be provided. The cost is $15 for the workshop. Space is limited and advance registration is required. Register online by Oct. 9 or call 513-345-3367 for more information.

Who should attend? The workshop is for people of any age who are: thinking about retirement, or are already retired; expecting to provide help to aging parents or a spouse; already a caregiver for older or disabled loved ones; or expecting to live a long life!

COA’s Own Your Future workshop series is different from other financial planning seminars because participants are not pressured to buy investments or insurance policies or move into a specific long-term care facility. The goal is to provide accurate, unbiased information to give participants the tools they need in order to make informed decisions about their own long-term care needs and wishes.

Workshop Schedule
9:00 – 9:15 am – Registration

9:15 – 11:00 am: Importance of long-term care planning and estate planning. Learn why it’s important to plan early for long-term care needs. Many people wait until a crisis occurs to make important decisions about care and find that their options are limited. A local elder law attorney will lead a discussion on advance directives, guardianships, wills, trusts, power of attorney, and Medicare/Medicaid.

11:15 am – 12:15 pm: Caregiving and care options
At some point in their lives, most people will become caregivers - or need one, or both. This session will address those challenges, various options and settings for care, and community resources.

12:15 – 12:45 pm - Lunch

12:45 – 2:00 pm: Financial planning for long-term care. This session will cover financial planning for long-term care, providing information on effective planning to ensure that individual needs and wishes are met, and to develop a personal strategy for paying for long-term care.
