Suzanne Kathman, Executive Director of Mercy Neighborhood Ministries, was honored by Council on Aging of Southwestern Ohio for her vision and leadership in service to the elderly.

Kathman received Council on Aging’s Outstanding Professional in Aging award at the organization’s annual meeting March 9 at the Sharonville Convention Center.

“Sue is a voice for those whose voice is not often heard,” said Council on Aging President and CEO Suzanne Burke. “She is a tireless advocate whose vision has not only helped low-income seniors, but also created employment opportunities for people who become home care aides, a much-needed service.”

Using her experience in developing a nurse aide/home health aide training program for homeless women at Bethany House Services and in founding another non-profit, Healing Connections Associates, Inc., Kathman in 2007 worked with the Sisters of Mercy to form Mercy Neighborhood Ministries, Inc.

According to Sister Mary Stanton, Executive Coordinator of Mercy Neighborhood Ministries, “Sue turned a vision into a viable organization which has prioritized programs for the aging. These include home care, crisis assistance and food support, advocacy and social activities for the elderly poor.  Sue works tirelessly and with a passion that is unmatched. Her colleagues joke that they pity those who get in her way, because she will find a way around them, through diplomacy or sheer will. Yet she always has time for a hug and a story, and keeps track of the needs and concerns of Mercy Neighborhood Ministries’ many elderly clients.”
