World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is June 15, 2016
June 15, Council on Aging will join our community, partners and people worldwide in commemorating World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD).
WEAAD was launched in 2006 by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization at the United Nations to provide an opportunity for communities around the world to promote a better understanding of abuse and neglect of older persons by raising awareness of the cultural, social, economic and demographic processes affecting elder abuse and neglect.
According to the National Center on Elder Abuse, every year an estimated 5 million older Americans are victims of elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation. And that’s only part of the picture: Experts believe that for every case of elder abuse or neglect reported, as many as 23 cases go unreported. With such a complex issue, there is only one way we can address it: United together.
How can one nation take action one person at a time? The Administration for Community Living offers these tips and encourages you to
- Engage seniors
- Empower communities
- Speak out
- Involve youth
The National Center on Elder Abuse offers World Day Tool Kit which provide ready-to-use messaging, logos, materials and other resources to help you take action.
