Low-income home owners in Butler County can apply for assistance with certain home repairs, including mobility modifications, through Supports to Encourage Low-income Families (SELF), the county’s Community Action Agency.

The free repairs and modifications are offered through SELF’s Neighbors Who Care: Home Repair program. Repairs include mobility improvements (wheelchair ramps, grab bars), porch and step repairs, interior and exterior painting, gutter, soffit, and siding repairs, etc. SELF does not do roofing, electrical, heating and air, or plumbing repairs, but can make referrals to reputable individuals/businesses for such repairs.

Individuals eligible for repairs must be low-income homeowners in Butler Country, regardless of age. The exact income eligibility amounts vary with household size, location in the county, and type of income, but generally is 50% of the Area Median Income (AMI) or lower. For example, the 50% AMI figure for a household of four is $35,600.

To apply, the process begins with a simple one-page application. Call SELF at (513) 868-9300 or email info@selfhelps.org and ask for the Home Repair application. Further documentation, including proof of income, will be collected prior to any work being done on the home.

Neighbors Who Care is a volunteer driven program. All repairs are completed by volunteers who are supervised by SELF staff. SELF’s volunteers come from a variety of sources, including church youth groups, scout groups, college service groups, corporate groups, and retirees. If you are interested in volunteering with the program, SELF needs volunteers for projects as simple as painting or doing brush removal, and as complex as building a wheelchair ramp. Both groups and individuals are encouraged to contact SELF. The schedule is very flexible to accommodate volunteers (days, weekends, evenings). Call (513) 868-9300 or email info@selfhelps.org for more information.
