Elder abuse takes on many forms:

  • Neglect/Self Neglect – Daily living needs are not met by the caregiver or the older adult.
    Indicators of Neglect/Self Neglect –Mental confusion, poor hygiene, poor environment, inadequate health care, and inability to perform activities of daily living.
     
  • Psychological Abuse –Deliberate conduct that causes mental anguish.
    Indicators of Psychological Abuse –Depression, change in behavior or attitude, isolation, and fear/anxiety.
     
  • Physical Abuse –Non-accidental conduct that causes bodily harm.
    Indicators of Physical Abuse –Change in behavior, cuts, bruises, burns, confinement, and isolation.
     
  • Exploitation –Theft or misuse of money, assets, or other valuables.
    Indicators of Exploitation –Unusual bank withdrawals, change in power of attorney, personal belongings missing, and different signatures on checks.
