Older Adults Can Get Help with Digital TV Transition

Council on Aging of Southwestern Ohio (COA) is asking area older adults who are having problems with the digital TV transition to call (513) 345-8643 for help.

On May 28, COA received a grant from the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (N4A) to help older adults in the greater Cincinnati area prepare for the digital TV transition. As a grantee, COA will participate in the Digital TV: Keeping Seniors Connected campaign. The campaign's goal is to educate and assist vulnerable older adults with the transition to digital TV.

As part of the campaign, COA will:
  • Educate older adults about the digital TV transition
  • Provide one-on-one assistance with transition, including:
    • Helping seniors determine if they need a converter box
    • Helping seniors apply for converter box coupons
    • Over-the-phone and in-home assistance with converter box installation
    • Over-the-phone troubleshooting and equipment education
The nationwide switch from analog to digital broadcasting was originally scheduled to take place on Feb. 17 but was extended until June 12, 2009. After June 12, households with analog-only TVs (with a rooftop antenna or rabbit ears on the TV), and not subscribed to cable or satellite service, needed to purchase a digital-to-analog converter box to continue to watch free, over-the-air programming.
