Conference designed to empower caregivers
Organizations that educate and support caregivers have combined forces to present southwestern Ohio's first Caregiver Empowerment Conference, a two-day event featuring four keynote speakers and 30 workshops.
The conference is presented by the Southwest Ohio Caregiver Coalition. It's designed for any one providing care to those who are ill or disabled, whether professionals such as social workers and nurses, or family members taking care of aging parents.

At this conference caregivers can:
- Get tips to help balance the ups and downs of caregiving
- Learn what it means to "age in place" and the impact that can have on our community
- Learn new activities to help improve a care recipient's quality of life
- Hear from experts on topics including safety, Alzheimer's, HIV/AIDS, emergency preparedness, financial impact of caregiving, hospice care, legal documents, long-term care, estate planning, nutrition, suicide prevention, and how to talk to someone with a terminal illness
- Discover community resources that can help them be a better caregiver
- Learn how to better communicate with family members and health care professionals
Keynote speakers are neurologist and author Barry Bittman, M.D., an expert on body-mind wellness; Lela Knox Shanks, author of "Your Name Is Hughes Hannibal Shanks," about her 13 years caring for her husband at home until he died of Alzheimer's; Jerry Reed, Director of the national Suicide Prevention Resource Center; and humorist Lenny Dave, who understands that caregivers need a break.

About Council on Aging
Council on Aging of Southwestern Ohio (COA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for older adults and their families.
Since 1974, COA has been designated by the state of Ohio as the Area Agency on Aging for Butler, Clermont, Clinton, Hamilton and Warren counties. COA plans, coordinates, funds and administers programs for an area that is home to more than 252,000 adults age 60 and older.
