Thousands gather at Coney Island for 2010 Senior Expo

Day of fun and learning commemorates Older Americans Month and Senior Citizens Day
Betty and Mark of Hamilton come to Expo each year to dance under the sun at Moonlight Gardens.
(May 10, 2010) -- For more than 30 years, Council on Aging of Southwestern Ohio (COA) and thousands of older adults and caregivers have celebrated Older Americans Month and Senior Citizens Day at one of Cincinnati's most nostalgic landmarks. Tuesday, May 18 marks the 33rd year of COA's Senior Citizens Day celebration -- Senior Expo -- at Coney Island.

Older adults and all who care about them are invited to join us at Coney Island, 6201 Kellogg Ave., 10am-5pm, Tuesday May 18. (Information booths close at 3pm) Tickets are $1.50 at the gate.  Parking is free.

Great jazz and big band music, dancing, and more than 100 information booths covering topics from caregiving to financial planning, are staples of Senior Expo and the reason that so many return year after year.

But, over three decades, Senior Expo has changed to keep pace with today's active older adults. In 2006, Wellness Island was added, giving older adults an opportunity to learn about and try new health and wellness activities.

In keeping with the theme for 2010 Older Americans Month -- Age Strong! Live Long! -- Wellness Island is back for its fourth year at Senior Expo. This year's activities include Nintendo Wii, chair volleyball, Tai Chi, archery, healthy eating, massage therapy, Curve's SilverSneakers program and more. Free H1N1 vaccinations will be available from the Cincinnati Health Department at Wellness Island, and health screenings will be offered at information booths throughout the park.

Here are some activities you won't want to miss:
  • Wellness Island -- ongoing activities 10am-2pm, Lake Front Patio
  • Hana Hou Hula Dancers -- 10:25am, Moonlite Pavilion
  • Juggling and storytelling by Tom Sparough, The Space Painter -- 11am-3pm, throughout the park (new for 2010)
  • Welcoming Ceremony -- 12pm, Moonlite Gardens
  • Dance Contest featuring the Maple Knoll Big Band -- 1-1:30pm, Moonlite Gardens
  • Presentation of the Kings and Queens -- 2pm, Moonlite Pavilion
WMKV 89.3 FM will broadcast live at the event from 10am-3pm.
