Planning underway for ADA 25th anniversary celebration
Thursday, September 18, 2014
While summer 2014 is just coming to a close, advocates for people with disabilities are already busy planning for a big celebration to be held next summer to mark the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
Locally, more than two dozen organizations and advocates are working together to plan a day of celebration and reflection for July 27, 2015. The theme for the celebration is Disability Rights are Civil Rights. The day will begin with a Disability Pride Walk from Cincinnati’s City Hall to Fountain Square. From 10am – 2pm at Fountain Square, information booths, activities, guest speakers, food and entertainment will be available for the general public to learn about the ADA.
“Those of us on the inside know how much the ADA has helped and what it has done,” said Kat Lyons, advocacy coordinator for the Center for Independent Living Options and a member of the local planning committee. “In keeping with our theme, our focus for this event is raising awareness among the general public and helping people understand that disability rights are civil rights, not special rights.”
According to the Cincinnati ADA Silver Anniversary Facebook page, the ADA was signed by President George H.W. Bush on July 26, 1990. It is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including jobs, schools, transportation, and all public and private places that are open to the general public. The purpose of the law is to make sure that people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else. The 25th Anniversary gives us cause to reflect on how far we have come, and to look ahead to what we can do over the next 25 years. Most importantly it gives us cause to celebrate the advancement we have made since 1990, and what people with disabilities can do as a result of the ADA.
