Church hosts COA Health and Wellness workshops; encourages others to host
November 12, 2025
Council on Aging (COA) offers a variety of free health and wellness programs designed with older adults and caregivers in mind. The goal: to help them better manage their own health.
COA’s workshops are offered at community-based locations (host sites) across its five-county service area, making it easy for older adults and caregivers to participate close to home. Host sites include health care organizations, YMCAs, faith-based organizations, senior centers and senior housing buildings.
St. James Episcopal Church on Montana Avenue is one such host site. Here, Rev. Mary Carson relates her experience hosting a Tai Chi workshop:
COA: What is it like being a host site?
We have been thrilled. There has been a very good response from our congregation. After it was over, people asked ‘when will we do this again?’ We are looking forward to beginning another workshop next month.
It was very easy. They (COA) provided all the promotional materials and assisted the participants with registration. It worked seamlessly.
COA: What does it mean to your parishioners to have access to these workshops?
We have a growing number of older adults, especially younger seniors, who are increasingly concerned about their wellbeing. They have particular concerns about falling.
COA: Why did you want to work with COA?
I was inclined to work with Council on Aging because people I know have had good experiences with COA. I know them, trust them and respect them.
COA: What would you say to an organization thinking of hosting a workshop?
Do it – it will be tremendously beneficial.
