Local organization creates connection during dementia journey

August 27, 2025

What began in 2016 as a small fundraiser, has grown into a vital local nonprofit: the Giving Voice Foundation. Focused on improving older adult health across the tri-state area, the Foundation builds programs centered on advocacy, education, engagement, and storytelling. The mission is simple yet powerful—to create meaningful moments of connection and even joy for those navigating the dementia journey.

According to the National Institute on Aging, there is a powerful connection between music and managing dementia symptoms. Knowing this, Giving Voice Foundation, in partnership with Catholic Charities’ Caregiver Assistance Network (CAN) formed Creative Connections in 2021. Creative Connections is a music and movement program for both individuals with dementia AND their caregivers.

Each week, participants are led through music and movement experiences filled with smiles and AHA! moments as melodies trigger happy memories. Simultaneously, their caregivers attend a support group in a separate room, where they receive education, emotional support and respite. Both the music and caregiver sessions are facilitated by local aging professionals and artists.

Kathy Palmer is a participant in the Monday classes. “They play an old song,” she says, “and all the words come back…it’s such a success story for me. Mondays have become my favorite day of the week.”

“Some are initially reluctant,” admits Kristin Cooley, Program Director. “But by the end of the class, they’re hugging fellow participants and laughing. Their caregiver is breathing a little easier, too.”
