Public Health Nursing Department

 Through partnerships and collaborations, the Public Health Nursing Department provides services to the entire community to promote health and prevent disease. They are specialists in vaccines for the prevention of communicable diseases for both children and adults.  They participate in the Vaccines for Children program that allows us to provide childhood vaccines at very low cost. They offer international travel vaccines for anyone planning an overseas trip. Arrangements can be made to provide certain vaccines on site if needed (at schools, churches, public vaccine clinics). Nurses also coordinate programs in Butler County for the State of Ohio on lead measurement in children, tuberculosis tracking, the Perinatal Hepatitis B Prevention Program, and disease outbreak investigations.

Dr. Boyd founded CMH’s accredited cancer program. Hamilton County Public Health Division of Disease Prevention

Hamilton County Tobacco Free Partnership

Hamilton County Public Health is a leader in the fight against tobacco use and exposure in Hamilton County. The Division of Health Promotion and Education works with a variety of partners in the community to prevent tobacco use, help people quit, and protect people from secondhand smoke.

Greater Cincinnati Flu Collaborative

The Flu Collaborative was first formed almost 10 years ago by the Greater Cincinnati Health Council when a need was discovered in our area for flu vaccine awareness and education. The Health Council transferred ownership of the Flu Collaborative to the Hamilton County General Health District to ensure that the Collaborative`s flu outreach efforts continued.

The Flu Collaborative meets monthly and seeks to increase awareness about the importance of flu vaccination through outreach and educational efforts to the general public and the health care community. Call (513) 946-7882 for meeting dates and locations.

The Flu Collaborative manages public vaccination information through (513) 931-SHOT, a vaccine hotline that has evolved from a seasonal call center for flu vaccine availability, to a year-round information source for all types of vaccines.

Health Programs

The Health District offers health education and wellness programs for seniors throughout the County. Programs such as chair volleyball, walking clubs and resisting muscle loss are available.

  • Active for Life is a program for adults age 50 and older that teaches simple, practical ways to be more physically active. A few small changes can make a real difference in your everyday life and help you gain more control over your health and independence. Active for Life is the right choice for a healthier life.
  • Be physically active without ever leaving your chair! Hamilton County Public Health organizes a Chair Volleyball League for Hamilton County`s older adults. Staff provide orientations, coaches` manuals, and help organize league play.
  • The road to better health one step at a time. Hamilton County Park District organizes Walk Club for county residents at five local Park District parks. Hosts are provided for scheduled Club walks and membership is free.

What is the Rescue Bank Program?

Rescue Bank is a signature program of GreaterGood.org, an international non-profit that benefits People, Pets, and the Planet.

Rescue Bank provides grants to the animal rescue community in the form of donated pet food, delivered through our network of regional affiliates.  We pay to ship the products directly from the donor to the affiliate’s warehouse. Affiliates then distribute these grants to pre-qualified recipients based on demonstrated need and verified census. Pet food grants allow rescue organizations to transfer part of their food budget to much-needed services such as spay/neuter, vet services, facility maintenance or improvement, adoption events, etc.

TriHealth Driver Rehabilitation Program
For disabled drivers of all ages, TriHealth offers an objective evaluation of the skills necessary for driving. You must have a physician prescription to participate in this test. TriHealth can perform the in-clinic evaluation at Good Samaritan Hospital or the TriHealth Fitness & Health Pavilion.

Parish Nurses
In 1998, Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation, with a grant from what is today called the Health Foundation of Greater Cincinnati, hired two nurses to cover eight schools. Their work in the schools complements that of 10 parish nurses based at churches in Over-the-Rhine, North Fairmount, Bond Hill, Winton Terrace/Winton Hills, Clifton/Mt. Auburn and Walnut Hills.

Bethesda Alcohol and Drug Treatment Program.
The highly-regarded program, established in 1978, is the longest-running of its kind in Greater Cincinnati. It provides a path to recovery for those at risk of losing their families, careers and health to chemical dependency.

Survivor Benefits

If the deceased was receiving monthly payments you will need to notify the VA of the death.

If the deceased was a veteran who received a discharge other than dishonorable, survivors may receive $300 toward funeral expenses and $150 for burial costs. Burial in a national cemetery is free to a veteran, spouse, and dependent children. Veterans are also eligible for a headstone or grave marker.

The surviving spouse and dependent children of disabled veterans may also be entitled to a lump sum death benefit; monthly payments, such as educational assistance; and medical care.

CHAMPVA: The Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs (CHAMPVA) is a comprehensive health care program in which the VA shares the cost of covered health care services and supplies with eligible beneficiaries. The program is administered by Health Administration Center, located in Denver, Colorado.

Prescription coverage is available for veterans with an honorable discharge. Must enroll with VA and be seen by VA doctor. Free prescriptions for low-income veterans.
