Ohio Department of Medicaid is preparing to transition from ICD-9 to ICD-10

By October 1, 2014, all state Medicaid programs will transition from the Ninth Edition of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-9) set of diagnosis and inpatient procedure codes, to the far more contemporary Tenth Edition of those code sets—or ICD-10—used by most developed countries throughout the world.

This transition will have a major impact on anyone who uses health care information that contains a diagnosis and/or inpatient procedure code and is required of all providers and payers under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

In preparation of this change, Ohio Medicaid and the Ohio Medicaid Managed Care Plans have created a Q & A document. This document is intended to give Ohio Medicaid providers information regarding the implementation of the ICD-10 code set.

Benefits of ICD-10

  • enhanced code specificity
  • greater accuracy in data analytics and reporting
  • an improved ability to measure the quality of health services
  • the ability to identify various populations for targeted outreach and case management
