Medicare Eligibility
An American citizen is eligible for Medicare if he/she meets any of the following criteria:
- Age 65 or older and eligible for benefits under either Social Security or Railroad Retirement, or is a Federal, State or local government employee insured on his/her own record or that of a spouse.
- Disabled of any age and has been receiving Social Security or Railroad disability benefit payments for 24 consecutive months. (24 month disability waiting period)
- Is any age and is receiving regular dialysis or has received a kidney transplant due to End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)
Note: If a person is declared disabled due to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), more commonly known as "Lou Gehrig`s Disease," the 24-month disability waiting period is waived. Anyone age 65 or older who is not eligible for Social Security benefits may buy Medicare if he/she is an American citizen, or is an alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence and has resided in this country for Security Administration at 800-772-1213.
