May is Older Americans Month!

OAM2015 Celebrate Older Americans Month and be Well Beyond 60!

Every year since its establishment in 1963 by President John F. Kennedy, the U.S. has recognized May as Older Americans Month to celebrate the contributions of older Americans. The theme for this year’s month in the state of Ohio is Well Beyond 60! As they do throughout the year, the Ohio Department on Aging urges those over age 60 to take control of their health and wellness by staying active and taking advantage of wellness and safety programs.

Remember, what you do to and for yourself throughout your lifespan has a greater impact on your well-being than genetics. There is never a wrong time to make meaningful changes to your health, and there is ALWAYS something you can do to be healthier, avoid injury, keep chronic conditions in check and live "Well Beyond 60!"

Here are some ideas for making meaningful changes this month and year-round:

  • The Healthy-U Chronic Disease Self Management Program is for adults of any age and their caregivers with any type of chronic health condition (diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, fibromyalgia, arthritis, sickle cell and others). It is an evidenced-based program that focuses on problem solving and building self-confidence to help people maintain their health and manage chronic health conditions.
  • STEADY U Ohio is the state's comprehensive falls prevention initiative led by the Ohio Department of Aging and supported by Ohio government and state business partners. Visit www.steadyu.ohio.gov to take a falls risk self-assessment, find easy steps to prevent falls, and learn about A Matter of Balance, a community-based education program to help participants see falls as something they can control.
  • According to the Corporation for National and Community Service, older adults who stay active through volunteering, fitness and other activities see improved physical and mental health. A great place to start is your local senior center. You can find them right here at our online resource directory

No matter what steps you take, remember that you have the ability to make the changes to be Well Beyond 60!
