Council on Aging to host event: A Conversation on Aging

On July 29, Council on Aging will host "A Conversation on Aging: Are we Prepared?"a presentation and discussion about individual and community preparedness for our region's growing aging population.

The event will provide highlights from the Cincinnati results of the fourth annual United States of Aging Survey and an opportunity for local leaders to discuss ways to prepare for the coming “age wave.”

The event will be held from 8 - 10:30 AM at the Sharonville Convention Center, 11355 Chester Road.

This marks the fourth year the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (n4a) has partnered with UnitedHealthcare and the National Council on Aging to conduct the United States of Aging Survey. The focus of this year’s survey expanded to include not only older adults, but also professionals who work closely with the older adult population, including staff from Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs), physicians, pharmacists and credit union staff. Qualitative information was gathered in Denver and Cincinnati, with support from Council on Aging of Southwestern Ohio and Denver Regional Council of Governments.

At the July 29 event, Sandy Markwood, CEO of n4a, will give an intro to the 2015 United States of Aging Survey, and Kyle Riplinger will present highlights of the results. Riplinger is Senior Analyst for Penn Schoen Berland, the firm that conducted the research.

Event attendees - local leaders from a variety of fields - will then work in small groups to explore ideas and opportunities that will help our region prepare for a dramatic demographic shift.  These discussions will help advise Council on Aging on future strategic directions and spending priorities for federal Older Americans Act funding.

Participants will also view a video excerpt from the new PBS documentary, Caring for Mom & Dad. The film, featuring Council on Aging and other local voices, presents an intimate view of adults caring for their aging parents and explores the emotional, health, and financial challenges that caregivers face every day.  The documentary aired locally on PBS affiliate CET 48 in May.

Invitations have been sent for the event, but there may be space for a limited number of additional participants. For more information, please contact Amy Leonhardt, aleonhardt@help4seniors.org.
