New partnership aims to help Medicare recipients understand their RX benefits

The National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (n4a) and Walgreens have a new partnership called Answers on Aging®│Pharmacy Benefits. This partnership provides tools for Medicare counselors to educate Medicare beneficiaries on how to maximize their benefits to achieve better health outcomes and savings.

The vast majority of Medicare beneficiaries do not understand or take full advantage of their Medicare prescription drug coverage. As a result, many people do not take their medications as they as they should.  This can have a negative impact on beneficiaries' physical and financial health.

Answers on Aging®│Pharmacy Benefits is an educational toolkit designed to help Medicare beneficiaries make the most of their prescription drug coverage, including tips on talking with doctors and pharmacists, and finding ways to lower prescription drug costs.

The educational toolkit contains:

  • Counselor’s Quick Guide
  • Counselor-to-Consumer Discussion Guide
  • Consumer Quick Guide and Consumer Checklist

Toolkits are available in color and black and white. These materials provide a brief overview of the issue and a simple, step-by-step process for helping consumers understand their benefits based on their specific needs.

In early 2016, n4a and Walgreens will provide additional education and outreach tools to support public recognition of Pharmacy Benefits Week (PBW), a new observance developed to shine a spotlight on this important issue. PBW will take place January 25-29, 2016, when older adults begin to seek help understanding their new prescription benefits in the new year.
